Azureus Downloads Faster Than uTorrent

uTorrent is a very light BitTorrent program compared to Azureus. It loads fast, responds to user interaction quickly, and has a pretty attractive UI. But it is undeniably slow when it comes to downloading.

When downloading the same torrent on the same two computers connected to the same Internet connection, Azureus races to connect to as many peers as possible, while uTorrent seems to be in a rehab of some kind. I’ve tested this with 5 torrents just to make sure. The result — Azureus is definitely faster.

uTorrent doesn’t seem to be very aggressive when it connects to peers. Only a few connections are made and those peers often put uTorrent on the bottom of their priority list.

In the programming perspective, uTorrent does not connect to as many peers as possible. While this may or may not be considered a bug, uTorrent seems to only connect to a fraction of the total number of peers, set by an algorithm related to share ratio. There is some kind of faulty logic that prevents uTorrent from connecting to many peers, which reinforces the algorithm.

After I finish downloading the couple of torrents in uTorrent, I’m switching to Azureus completely.

Interesting… Personally, I just use vanilla BitTorrent v4.2 or so. It does everything I need it to.

Have your tried BitComet? I was with BitComet all the while and quite satisfied with it.

Please come up with something like “Azureus Downloads Faster than BitComet” or “BitComet Downloads Faster than Azureus” so that I can decide to swich or not. ;)

Oooh… I’ve always used Azureus only because it was one of the first programs that popup during a search for BT programs. I didn’t know it was actually good compared to other programs..

Plus.. the blue icon is pleasing to the eye. :)

  5. 5March 20th, 2006Oliver Zheng says

EngLee, Azureus should be faster than BitComet. Bitcomet was coded to be the super leacher of them all — connect to as many as physically possible and fake something like the share ratio. Many torrent sites have banned BitComet and it connects to fewer and fewer users.

I like both and am currently using utorrent, but I may have to check out Azureus again!

Utorrent downloads just as fast for me as any other client I have used. try configuring it corectly and it will for you to.

  8. 8April 3rd, 2006Trajan says

hmmm interesting.. must be the way that you have your configuration set. My utorrent gets very fast downloads.

  9. 9April 3rd, 2006Oliver Zheng says

I haven’t configured anything manually after installing Azureus and uTorrent, and Azureus downloads faster. I assume customization is required for uTorrent then.

  10. 10April 7th, 2006cliffdaballer296 says

yo, bitcomet beats azerus cuz u can custimize it. if u custimize bitcomet/utorrent u can get an average of 80kB/sec (thats 4 me and i have a slow intenet 1.5 mbps) simply go to google and type speed up bitcomet and there is 1 with a patch and u can download like me.

so use bit comet cuz it isnt as slow as utorrent/azerus.
it is better than utorrent becuz it is more aggressive

  11. 11April 7th, 2006Oliver Zheng says

Bitcomet is supposedly faster. That’s why some torrent servers have banned Bitcomet.

i used only Azureus and loved it immensely. however, the big problem with it was that it took such a long time to load, and when it crashes (or when my PC crashes), it takes a really, really long time to re-check the files.

and i suppose it could be the fact that it’s now caused my PC to PERMANENTLY have a 100% CPU usage that I’ve tried to fix by going to the Azureus Wiki, but their solution DOESN’T work, to my dismay.

I decided to try uTorrent instead. It’s very lightweight, and while not as fast, I guess it should do for me, because I’ve tried to fix up my computer for Azureus to work again over the last few days and all the advice just doesn’t work.

  15. 15May 17th, 2006Oliver Zheng says

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it? Azureus messes up sometimes too, because it may try to connect to too many peers. Try setting the total maximum connections to less than 500 too.

  17. 17June 5th, 2006karen says

i’ve been using Utorrent, and I find the downloads extremely slow, even though I got my friend to configure the settings properly for me. It might probably be my connection speed (1mb, which I hope to upgrades soon), but it can often take up to 1h30 mins to download a moderately sized file: albums etc. I’d like to try Azureus but i’ve heard that it’s quite space consuming in comparison with Utorrent, but if it’s worth the extra space i’ll probably consider switching. What do you think?

  18. 18June 5th, 2006Oliver Zheng says

Definitely worth a try. If it does not work as well as you hope, you can always uninstall it.

  19. 19June 12th, 2006jingodingo says

I just want to say the most important thing first.

    UTORRENT is better than AZUREUS……

    1. Its soo fast to start.
    2. checks files faster when a crash happens
    3. never crashes (Azurues does)
    4. Doesnt take up much space (it matters when you have slow computer)
    5. Doesnt need JAVA (Java lags computer. now a days you need Dual core to have JAVA stable)
    6. If you have router simple configuration will actually make it faster than Azureus.
    7. It looks better than Azureus.
    8. Torrents start faster when downloading a new file.

There are more things.. but this is all i have discovered

Azureus is good but just not as good as UTORRENT

  20. 20June 20th, 2006Koreyu says

I have to reiterate what jingodingo said about computer usage. I don’t devote all my mem to my d/l’s so yeah, but if your mem can afford it, feel free. Just a comment.

How about those of u getting STEADY rates of over lets say 50k/sec lay out the specs of your boxes. I’m just about 1.5 ghz with 1 gig mem 7500 rpms HD currently testing az, again to see what happens. Oh and I noticed if I use the same torrent with two different clients it tends to screw up some where along the line. Oh and about service providers I am in Taiwan anyone in asia that knows about caps from providers in this area let me know. I know back home in the states we have a 16k up cap as a common thing.

Hi sorry to interupt but i believe all these programs are good i have used Utorrent / Azerus / Bitcomet / Bitlord and others from those test conducted i have tested torrent with little seeders (5-10) and they all failed very slow speeds the best overall was BITLORD at around 50kbs while the others were between 20kb-38kb and all did excellentily well when their was atleast 50 seeders or more eg Naruto and speeds reached from 200kb - 500kb so it all depends on how many seeders are available, the ranking system of trackers and your ISP capping BITTORENT protocol and also people using leech mods for each package so if you notice someone getting more then 300kb speeds while other are a lot lower then that user is cheating using leechers just ban that user.

  29. 29August 9th, 2006Jtreach says

Bitlord is just an old modified version Bitcomet, check out wikipedia if you dont believe me. I’m currently using utorrent because of the smallness of the program but i might switch back to azureus as it seems to be faster.

And with some torrents it takes it forever to connect even though there are plenty of seeds. Weird…

  37. 37November 10th, 2006roger says

Haven’t tried Azureus, but have given up with utorrent on XP sp2 / 1Ghz Athlon (I know, it’s old and slow) / 1GB ram. Crashes if it’s left to itself on a big download, but more importantly it crashes Windows as well. Last crash took out the download as well (fedora 6, 70% complete) so it would not even resume. I’ve now lost patience. Pretty sure it’s utorrent instigating the crash (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). I’ve tried tweaking utorrent but I always end up with a crash if doing a big download. In the 5 years I’ve been running Win XP I’ve had BSOD no more than 6 times. One of those was a virus, one was a driver problem. The other four were after I started using utorrent. I’m now trying out vanilla BitTorrent 5.

  38. 38November 16th, 2006Hassan says

Hmm… well I think Utorrent is alot better than Azureus. I had Azureus and then changed to Utorrent. When I had Azureus, it used up alot of resources. Games were lagging and internet was alot slower than normal. But with Utorrent I have none of these problems. It’s as if the program is not even there. Plus download speeds are alot faster. With Azureus I was getting uploading speeds of 30/kb but with Utorrent i’m getting speeds of 100/kb+. Utorrent was giving me slow downloads when I first installed, but after I configured it, my download speed had a major increase. There’s a site on the internet which helps u configure Utorrent for better results.

I must say, I often get a BSOD when using utorrent, which is a shame because otherwise it is great. I might have to try bitcomet or azureus.

    http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=7mbsecau9.jpg
The above foto shows utorrent at the same pc system with the same line. i had no problems what so ever i havent ever touched anything such as special configs blah blah blah….
This foto also shows…utorrent working properly…
    http://img92.imageshack.us/my.php?image=9misombytepersecju7.jpg

    also with the same system…
    My bottom line is…that!
1st Azureus in my case because of the java env. was a bit heavy even for a normal good system.
2nd I found Utorrent or μtorrent to be totally light (no set up needed and the exe is only 170kb and autorun).
3rd The above 2 fotos show so many torrents been downloaded at the same time yet the system was consuming only 7.8mb of RAM…..where as using Bitcomet earlier in the year 5 or 6 simultaneous torrents would cost me with Bitcomet about 21 to 26mb of ram…(havent seen the ram used by Azureus ..sorry)THUS
to my and the system i was using utorrent was fast, ram effective (even if i had 1 giga to spare) and quick….
My experience has shown that users with slow lines 512k dsl etc…..need to try and do some weird configs….on utorrent…
windows has 10 simultaneous ports as default to connect with peers….
there is a patch….that bypasses this billy-boy (Microsoft) “security measure” and can take it to 55 and 60 (even though it can end up unstable after 50 peers which is a pretty good value) and connect with more peers thus download faster from more.
    also other
utorrent configs….from what i read around,
if you want to browse the net and download at the same time….take down 10 to 15 % of the max limit you have as download rate at utorrent…this will help your browsing become easier and a bit quicker….
there is a connection - torrent active kinda tool that circulates in the torrent circles where you put ur dsl line and it gives you down speed, up speed of your line’s available bandwidth, how many active torrents u must have how many max peers you can be connected with and some other thigns you need to change in the advanced section of utorrent …..i believe u can find this file in mininova.org
    Thats all……..
finalising, cause i said too much, to me…utorrent was perfect, azureus as my friends say is perfect but they run linux and java runs faster at linux( they say also that it needs good and weird -hard config as a client the azureus)
My advice windows ppl use utorrent linux ppl azureus…
the rest clients are common toothpastes as we say in Elladara :D
    I hope i was helpful..goodluck

I’m having heck of a lot of trouble where I am (in Asia, no more). I before used Azureus to download my torrents, and only recevied a good connection from people in Malaysia, so I was kind of frsutrated with the slow speds and moved to uTorrent.

When i did, first time I used it I got relatively fast speeds, and was quite please with it. After using it a second tmie, it won’t even connect to anymore peers.

I have tried everything to fix the problem (like the NAT test), but there seems to be nothing to fix it.

So I wanted to ask, how does one get the best out of torrent downloads (i.e fast torrent downloads)? Does it depend on the internet provider or is this something I can fix myself?

    Thanks!

Azureus is slightly faster, but the difference is minimal provided you configure correctly. You should know your upload speed, set it slightly lower than that. Also, increase the max connections and max peers to a high number; you will connect to a lot of seeds/leechers that way.

I live in China and after the earthquake in Taiwan it seems as if uTorrent was never the same. The Internet connections have been recovered now and uTorrent still is crapped out. I log on and one or two files show only one or two users are available and the download speed is snail pace. Just today, I got rid of it and downloaded Azureus and all is back to a pace I can be proud of when downloading things and violating IPR.

I installed Azureus and for some reason all the text changed to chinese r sumthing - even though upon installing it I chose the english language. Then I installed uTorrent, and downloads were slow at first (between 8-25 kb/s). I found out that Windows XP only allows you to connect to 10 ip’s at a time, to protect your comp from viruses. So i got a patch that changed this to 50 ip’s, and my downloading rate went to 150-350 kb/s. The site I got the patch from was: http://torrentfreak.com/evid4226patch223d-enzip/. I’m runnig tired of Utorrent’s unpredictable antics too, I mean at first, the downloads are all pretty fast, but after I followed an instructional modifiaction and configuration video on Youtube on how to make Utorrent download faster, it totally screwed everything up I even optimized and tweaked where it said Advance Settings [warning: Do not modify] heres the video, it supposedly worked for many people You tube video on how to tweak Utorrent

All my torrents show more than 100 available seeds but connected to only less than 10 of them. Utorrent was really great and responsive the the first time I test drove it, but the second time around things start coming down to a crawl. Yeah i live in malaysia where ISPs suck, only offering domestic bandwidth of 1Mbps only. As per azureus, the speeds vary greatly between torrents, but when things start to go fine, then it really does, the new version of Azureus, Vuze totally blacks out internet explorer and makes it incredibly slow, Azureus 2.5.0.4 is way better but because of its, high CPU usage due to RAM snaffling, its not recommended to run any other heavyweight programs simultaneously with Azureus. My advice is to perhaps use utorrent, which is incredibly small and compact, when using other apps and Azureus when you’re not. you can even try downloading the same torrent with both clients, at different times, they’ll download the pieces separately but store them in a common folder designated by you, i.e, D:/program files/Azureus/Azureus Downloads/torrent data

That’ll be the ultimate client comparison test of Azureus and Utorrent

I use a 15mB up / 2 mB down fiber connection, I’d say I back up about a third of what I’ve read here.

Bitcommet and(bitlord) both had adware embeded last time I used them and also seemed to get banned alot.

uTorrent has been my favorite for the last year or so out of all the ones I’ve tried and I’ve dl’d alot of different linux distro’s with it now. lightweight, stable, reliable, friendly. It’d download speed is perportionaly limited by upload speed unless downloading from a seed with no ratio requirements. I’d say it woudl be a poor choice for leechers though because theres a few ‘other’ torrent apps with cheat functions built right into the program.

Recently I tried azureus vuze and I was very impressed by the downloaders speed, it isnt technically a torrent downloader but it uses azureus to download the videos they list via torrents.

utorrent doesn’t show seeds/peers stats when torrents are stopped (not paused) you never know if you should resume seeding or not. I’m getting back to Azureus… kinda keavy on the system but stable. Now with utorrent I keep having BSOD all the time. No utorrent for linux… what a shame!

    “UTORRENT is better than AZUREUS……

    1. Its soo fast to start.
    2. checks files faster when a crash happens
    3. never crashes (Azurues does)
    4. Doesnt take up much space (it matters when you have slow computer)
    5. Doesnt need JAVA (Java lags computer. now a days you need Dual core to have JAVA stable)
    6. If you have router simple configuration will actually make it faster than Azureus.
    7. It looks better than Azureus.
    8. Torrents start faster when downloading a new file.

There are more things.. but this is all i have discovered

Azureus is good but just not as good as UTORRENT”

And I say HE IS RETARDED and none of his statements is true!!!!!

You can’t really compair their download speeds.
Some seeders and some leechers may be available at times and others not, making the speed vary. Torrent client speed is not something you can compair and have a solid solution unless you use a controlled environment for it.

I’ve gotten speeds of 50 K/B when my connection only supports 18 K/B on my radio signal internet provider. No, I’m not confusing bits and bytes. This happened using the limewire torrent downloader. I have no doubts that Azureus and utorrent are great, I think Azureus would be better because it is more aggressive when it comes to connecting, some files are easier to connect to than others, and not just because of the number of seeders.

I just wanted to chime in and say. I tested a lot of Bit torrent clients because I use bit torrent to keep up with my TV shows, since I can’t watch them during normal time slots. And before you say it, I hate Hulu and all those streaming sites. I starts my bit and go to sleep. When I got time, I watches my shows. Download speed will greatly depend on file you are downloading obviously. I have files that start off slow and someone, somewhere turns on their client and gives me 100 mb/s from them alone. Your client doesn’t matter honestly. Use whatever UI you like the best.

I personally used ABC for the longest and switched to uTorrent recently. I am a Computer Engineer and I don’t like porgrams eating up my memory, internet bandwidth, or CPU resources. Azureus tends to use all my internet bandwidth, even when it is not downloading, BitComet is mostly used to leech and forge upload ratios, BitLord tends to make your computer is bitch. I ran BitLord on my computer and it just took a processor core to itself. Core 1 read 100% as long as that program was running and that is simple unacceptible.

This is my opinion. I have T-Com ADSL Premium account (4mbps) and uTorrent downloads torrents as fast as possible.

I like uTorrent cose it does not takes to much system resources and do not overload my Connection (oc, if i allow to do it, it will do so).

Also. Share ratio is important. I set it to 2.0 on my comp, cose it is good to share torrent u just downloaded to others…

I do not wanna use share ratio faking programs, cose it’s not good for torrent community.

I do not want my Torrent app is agrressive. I want normal app, not agressive, cose i’m using my connection for several things, not just for downloadinf ilegal content to my pc.

    My voice is for uTorrent.

In my company we have test network envroinment (100mbps) with couple of servers and honey-pots. On one test server, uTorrent is running all the time, 24/7 and it is used for downloading torrents. No problems were noticed all this time.

    Neither azureus nor utorrent…
The best download is with bearshare.I tried to download lost episodes with utorrent and azureus.Although there were lots of sources, download speed was very low (with port forwarded computer) .About 20~30kb/s .Later I tried bearshare with my friend’s suggestion and It downloaded with 100kb/s which was my peek speed.Maybe it hasn’t got enough variety of files but before downloading anything, first try bearshare…

I have mac and windows computers at home. I have azureus (aka vuze) installed in my mac and uTorrent in windows. i tried to download same torrent (a tv show episode).
Vuze downloaded in ten minutes (total 336 MB)
uTorrent downloaded the same file in an hour.

    see the difference..
