(mt) Media Temple Shared-Server 6.0

Media Temple’s sneak peek at the next generation of shared hosting seems freakin’ sweet.

  • Ruby on Rails — I haven’t messed around with this anywhere yet, but it sure sounds sweet.
  • PHP 4 & 5 — a choice on per account basis, without safe-mode! First thing I’d make is a PHP socket server that doesn’t time out every 30 seconds.
  • MySQL 4.1.11 — seriously I don’t know why it took Media Temple so long to upgrade to this version, but it’ll sure support more scripts.
  • More Storage & Bandwidth — Woot!
  • New Control Panel — Media Temple has never bothered with a powerful dedicated control panel (such as CPanel, Plesk). This will be awesome.
  • Multi-Site Hosting — I’m at my limit of 6 domains right now. This will be great for new sites & clients.

Only question I got is that the current Shared-Server is at version 4.0. If the upgrade is going to 6.0, what about 5.0?

    Oh wow, that looks really awesome. They never had CPanel before? Weird. O__o;;

Looks pretty cool. Maybe they’ll upgrade to 5.0 and then to 6.0 right away so that you don’t even notice it’s changed? Still, it’s something very cool to look forward too!

It looks good, I wonder how much extra space and bandwidth they will provide. I considered switching to Media Temple but I don’t really want to pay up front for 24 months of hosting.

As my current server is playing up at the moment, I might consider it. Would you say it would be worth it?

Leo, It is definitely worth it. The uptime and speed are of course the first things that come to mind. Remember that power outrage back in May last year? (mt) was down for a few hours, and other hosts were down for weeks. The support is just incredible too. They called me for some simple support ticket once — just amazing customer service.

There is a lot of space in the basic shared server plan already. If it’s going to go up, I’m going to say 2GB -> 5GB for space and 20GB -> 40GB for bandwidth. Way too much for me already.

Kris, Media Temple would have made huge announcements if they upgraded, like this one haha. They like boasting about their services.

I use them with some of my domains and I just hate their current Control Panel + their multi domain handling with webmails etc. Can’t wait to see the changes!

Their account center is… good looking but not extremely functional. I do like how simple everything is though, especially the quick customer support. Their phone support is fantastic, and speed and uptime has to be hard to beat. Very hard. I would definitely recommend using their services…

Does anyone know/have-a-rumor when 6.0 will be coming? All they said is “when it’s ready”…

(mt) say that if the beta goes as planned they should release 6.0 by the end of the month (July). I’m starting to think that’s not going to happen though. :)

Is there any news on when this will be rolled out? Seems to be taking forever!

I was just Googling around wondering the same thing, Peter. This was posted nearly 6 months ago!
