Purpose (part 1) preluded some concepts such that purpose is the sum of actions of an individual. With respect to the individual, its purpose is absolutely everything it’s got, which has a lot to do with natural selection believe it or not. While natural selection is a phenomenon (or at least a belief that scientists use to explain evolution of species), I will talk about it as a an objective process here.
If God was in control of natural selection, he would of course pick the best of every species and let the vulnerable ones die out. So far so good. But how does God know which ones within a species are the best? Purpose is the key identification of an individual. If a dog’s purpose is to run around in the wild, bark at everything it sees, and catch anything that will satisfy its hunger, then a dog that acts this way will of course be chosen as the best and it will live on.
But what if a dog is supposed to get close to a human owner, fetch his newspaper, and act like it doesn’t know any better. That works too because as long as it keeps its owner happy, it’ll get its food and exercise. So how in God’s name is a dog supposed to know how it should act? Sounds more like the meaning of life doesn’t it?
Back to the Matrix. In the movie, there are characters categorized as “exiles,” who by definition have no purpose. Then the Matrix sends agents to kill those exiles. Sounds a lot like my rendition of natural selection eh?
In this society we humans do not live by the natural rules of selection. Theoretically any creature that does not effectively carry out what it is “meant” to do eventually dies out. Like the dog fetching it’s newspaper, or a predator hunting its food, if it does not do what it needs to do to survive then it will die; there is no assistance. We humans however will never see the end of bums, layabouts and lawbreakers. Why? Because governing bodies provide food and shelter regardless. The truths behind the laws of selection seem to get hazy, dont they?
Yes that’s so right. Society has disregarded the rules of natural selection and given opportunity to everyone.
