Playing with a Mac

I have the opportunity to play with a G4 Powerbook this weekend. I am actually really impressed with the overall functionality. It’s small, quiet, hot (but that’s bad), compact and pretty fast. It’s got 10.3.9 installed so I can’t really play with the cool new programs. For those using a Mac, is there anything in particular I should be playing with? :)

Are you a long term mac user Oliver? Ive been considering making the switch from PC to Mac for some time. Just the ol’ compatibility issues stopping me - got about 5 years worth of work in PC format which I cant just ignore.

This is just about the second time I have ever touched a Mac. Macs are nice, but yeah compatibility is way too much of a hag.

It depends what you actually intend doing on a mac. I have transfered all of my work flash/word/excel/html etc

3D work is a problem, but then you could always save up for a intel version and use boot camp (allowing XP to run) for now and the new version of OS X should have the ability to flick between apps in realtime.

I have a G4 Powebook with Tiger, I switched last year and tend to find the Mac has ways of doing everything. But being a developer I need both platforms to test anyway.

I’m the same. I haven’t yet played with it enough to want to switch to using a Mac. Even if I did, I would still need Windows.

You want a mac :) Mac OS 10.5 will supposedly include virtualization, i.e. Windows programs running in Mac OS X seamlessly. I saw your link on CSSReboot and searching for (mt) 6.0 shared server, so we have something in common. A mac is right for you, I type this on a 17″ MacBook Pro. $600 of it Apple even gave me for being a student and designer. Anything you do on your PC you’ll be able to do on Mac, with less worrying. If you’re happy on a G4 PowerBook, I have a feeling the MacBook Pro will surprise you (in a very good way). If you are considering switching, my email is icsmith12@gmail.com, just if you have question ;)

P.S.- I’m not an Apple fanboy, just an experienced mac user.

Hah I’m more of a developer, really. I probably can’t live without Windows/Linux right now when programming. A Mac will do it, but if I won’t use it as much, then why bother with one? I already have a dell laptop actually, so I’m not looking to spend another fortune getting a new computer.

Right now, I just can’t get my head around using Safari. F6 doesn’t focus the address!

As far as Safari, Mac OS X lets you set keyboard shortcuts, so not much trouble there. Also, Apple gives $300 off for students, and you can get good deals here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=E60A57E5&nclm=SpecialDeals

Just in case you’re ever in the market :)

Unfortunately I’m no longer a student. i think that PC has more possibilities as for now. What is good with Mac is good with PC but not vice versa. That’s my personal point of view, I may be mistaken of course.
