Discount on New (gs) Order
If you noticed in the screenshot and followed the domain urls, you would have arrived at inconcrete.com. :)
The Grid Server will be launched in a few days. That is all!
thank you oliver! woot!
Cheers Oliver for the extra info and discount, should come in handy. Any ideas about what mt are going to do with prices?
Prices are probably going to stay the same. I haven’t gotten the official word on that yet.
The (gs) will be released on the 15th. Just wait and see :)
It’s the 15th, but it hasn’t been released… then again it is 9am here in UK so it probably not due for another few hours!
While the 15th may in fact be the release date. You are probably not in the first wave of the transitioned domains.
You are right Rian. I remember back in May of 2005 when (mt) updated the hardware and moved most of the (ss) servers, my server was moved about one month after the launch date.
so whats up with the huge price hike? I go from $10/mo to $20/mo? That’s pretty disappointing. “grid” anything isn’t worth a 100% price increase. Sheesh. Not even a break for existing customers. I guess those of us who don’t need rails or GPUs or TBs of transfer, just solid hosting and PHP5, need not shop at (mt). Any recommendations for where the exodus should host at?
Well they have lost my business, and I have sent them feedback telling them so. I am not strongly considering Dreamhost, who for $15/month (after 50% price cut today) I can get 4TB (increasing by 32GB/month) bandwidth and 400GB space
Justin, actually current customers can still upgrade to the (gs) paying the same price if you are currently using (ss) Professional (not Advanced). I believe the upgrade will be to (gs) “lite”, which is a transition plan made available only to (ss) Pro customers who do not wish to upgrade to the full (gs) account. Open a ticket with (mt) support.
Leo, is it really about all that space and bandwidth? Sure it’s nice to have it all, but are you ever going to use 400GB of space? The quality and up-time is what matters.
True point, I use under a GB bandwidth per month and only use about 50MB space. So (mt)’s old (ss) plan would have been fine for me, and it was at the price I could afford.
A new blogger/webmaster is going to look at (mt) plans and think, god thats expensive and I don’t need half of the features. They will see Dreamhost’s plans which are half the price with what appear to be similar features and go with them. Chances are they will also stay with them for several years. (mt) seem to be aiming their plans at those who already have successful sites and want the extra power the grid server can provide. That is great, but if they don’t provide for those who don’t require the power (yet) they won’t get their business.
Does anyone know what the transition plan consists of - spec wise?
I am on SS-Pro and can’t find any information on the transition plan.
Luke, I believe for your SS-Pro account being upgrade into the (gs), your disk space, bandwidth, database, and number of domains limits will not change. Everything else will be upgraded. Don’t quote me on this, though — I’m not 100% sure.
I’ll know in about 2 hours–when my initial migration step is completed. I’ll also recheck the pricing info. I think Leo is right on–the starting blogger/designer/coder probably won’t be using (mt). They’ll probably go with a dreamhost/1and1/hostitcheap until they get their feet wet. Then the allure of (gs) may fit their needs. It appears that (mt) is changing business plans a bit, which is fine, and perhaps necessary in light of competitors such as mosso coming onto the scene. I guess I’m a bit frustrated as I’m just trying to step up to a mid- to upper-tier budget host (which (ss) 4.0 provided) that provides PHP5 and more than 5 MySQL dbs–along with the uptime and peergroup that (mt) provides. We’ll see if the pricing for us current customers works, and if (gs) lite can provide what some of the cheaper alternatives can (SSH, PHP5, etc…) then maybe I’ll need to not be so reactionary.
Oliver/Justin: Thanks. Yeah I got that distinct impression that they are changing their target customer base. I am based out in New Zealand - the exchange rate isn’t kind to me - so I hope this won’t push me out in the longer term.
Justin: Looking forward to hearing - I’ve got 10hours to wait yet.
sigh. :( It’s not looking good for us low-hanging fruit. (gs) lite is basically (ss)4.0 with increased bandwidth, storage, and PHP5. Still no extra MySQL dbs, no MailProtect, no RoR. What a gyp deal. Argh, I hate changing hosts but this is NOT what I’ve spent the last few months waiting for. Sheesh. Is it too much to ask for PHP5 and as many MySQL dbs as disk space will allow? Apparently I’m in the wrong camp.
See in case the plaintext doesn’t do it for ya.

Justin: Thanks for the details. Hmmmmm, that confirms (mt) are trying to break out a certain demographic of customers. It’ll be interesting to see how that works for them. I am dissappointed… and a bit suprised… but that’s the cookie crumbling.
I am making the migration as we speak… step 3…
Wow. That plan is huge beyond imagination. That’s amazin and really cool. Now only if I had need of such massive resources.
justin has a typo.
The Grid performance units is 1000 GPUs for the Grid-Server. Here is my question. What is the Grid performance units and if I upgrade to the (gs) from the lite version how is 500 more GPUs going to help?
Hey bro,
you really should write something about how crappy the grid is.. like how our sites are down everyday!! yeah man, is so cool. Database errors, random down time, no stats… woo wee! I am glad I made the switch.
Update your FREAKING SITE. kthx
http://oliverzheng.com/ *whistles*
Hey, your site’s menu is all weirdo in IE6… The images all have their normal text links placed below them for some odd reason…
u make me want to host with mt now….but alas… I don’t get the crazy amount of hits i used to at mezza-9.net (for a few good reasons.)
how have u been? uoft seriously killed my free time. >.
Thanks for very interesting article Oliver. btw. I really enjoyed reading all of your posts. It’s interesting to read ideas, and observations from someone else’s point of view… makes you think more. So please keep up the great work. Greetings
Oliver, I also found your article very usefull for me. I had to rethink several things. Thanks
