Mooncackes are good (the ones without egg yokes anyway), but unless you keep a Chinese lunar calendar, it is likely you will always be buying mooncackes when they are the most expensive — a week before it starts.
Technically speaking, the day you should eat it is on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is the 15th day of the 8th month of each lunar year. I know I certainly do not have a calendar that calculates when that is, so here is a list of Mid-Autumn Festival dates for the next 11 years.
- 2007: September 25

Only one more week to go until mooncake day!
At my place (Malaysia), most of the Chinese are keeping track of Lunar Calendar. And, I have been eating it for weeks. We still have lots of them (which we receive as gifts from friends and relatives).
Useful list, thank you! I don’t think I’ve ever eaten mooncakes, but I’ll make sure to give them a go next September 14th!
I can only recommend to buy moon cakes in March or April, when they are much cheaper than in September. If you put them in the freezer and defrost them some days before you want to eat them, they taste still very good.
