I just have to point this out. It seems like MSN Messenger is becoming worse and worse. V5 was ok. It didn’t lag (too much) and had a relatively simple interface that crappy computers could handle. V6 was crap. Microsoft had to implement such a heavy-graphic interface. My old computer was begging me to uninstall it. Ok, so MSN Messenger 7 beta came out. Not much difference, except for more graphics. The thing is, graphics are nice. After someone uses the program for more than a month, the graphics become boring and retarded.. which brings a whole business of downloading skins and lah.
A couple of days ago, the official version 7 of MSN Messenger was released. I have to say it’s crappier than I thought.
The Main Window

All the rectangles with red tints indicate the parts of the program written by the programmers when they were temporarily retarded. What the hell is a “personal message”? We already have a Screen Name. Personal Messages won’t be so personal, since everyone sees it anyway. What’s the point of that? To take up more space and make the program bigger so dial up users can poke their eye balls out while waiting for the installations.
I, for one, do not use MSN Space or MSN Today (the main MSN website). But I can’t blame Mr. Gates for implementing these crap buttons into an already lame program (that everyone uses). They have to find some way to falsely fool users into a site that no one uses. Right?
And regarding the MSN Space thing, I’ve realized that many contacts on my MSN contact list have one. Not all, but many. And I guess this is common for everyone - everyone’s “blog” has about one or two entry, dated back to a couple of months ago. And why does the annoying yellow star still blink beside your green msn guy even if it’s not updated? Because Microsoft wants more hits for their “MSN Space Association of the Stupidest and Most Useless Blog Apprentice” site.
I haven’t noticed the Search bar on the bottom of the screen since the new installation. I remember seeing it in previous versions of MSN Messenger. Now the ad is probably bigger, that’s why I see more crap beside it.
By the way, anyone know how to get rid of the ads with MsgPlus? I can’t find the option.
Chat Window

Before I forget, I have to mention the lamest thing about MSN Messenger. It freezes. All the time, for many unimaginable reasons. You join a 2+ people chat. The window freezes. You try to login after being disconnected because you took a bite of an apple, it freezes. You see someone leave a chat, it freezes. You try to sign off, but someone talks to you because the MSN server is incredibly slow, it freezes. You change the option of not displaying your display pic because it’ll freeze, it freezes..
The Games button currently doesn’t work. And it annoys me so much not remembering it doesn’t work, and clicking it only to have it stuck on top of the window for eternity until you realize you can manually shut down MSN Messenger through Task manager.
Seriously, what are the winks / packs / nudge for? Winks = smileys, except you have to download the latest version of Flash player and have it go on forever. Packs = .. !? Something that rich bastards would pay for I guess. And the nudge. The sound, and sudden movement of the window scare the crap out of me and make me so pissed at whoever did it. And also, add it to the freeze list. My old computer couldn’t take the nudge, so I had to uninstall MSN Messenger 7 and reinstall the 6th.
WHAT THE HELL IS THE SEARCH BUTTON FOR? We all know how to use an internet messenger program, maybe we might know how to go to www.google.com as well? Guess those MS programmers haven’t thought of that. It has to be so gigantic and has to be right below the send button. It just has to take up 200% of my screen and return weird results from the so called MSN website that I never use. This has got to be the worst feature Microsoft has ever invented for a messenger. I could piss on a dead cow and get a better messenger than that.
And I’m not sure what that pen icon is, beside the A. I installed MsgPlus right after I installed MSN Messenger 7, afraid that it’d take over my computer if I don’t get some protection first. Anyway, if it’s from MsgPlus, skip this part. If not, I have to say it’s the second most retarded thing Microsoft can make. Knowing that I don’t have a tablet, the messenger still puts that icon there, assuming that I know what a tablet is (some might not) and reminding me to buy a tablet. Microsoft doesn’t even make tablets, where does Bill get the profit from that?
Freeze

A friend sent me this. Apparently, it’s quite infamous.
The other crap that comes pre-installed

Pretty self-explanatory? In the MSN help documentation, somewhere there should be the notice “This program sucks entirely, don’t use it. If you choose to, well, go ahead, cause we want you to. If you do, please say good things about it, even though it really really sucks.” Nuh-uh.
And you see, there are 273 email messages unchecked. Why? Because Hotmail sucks as much as MSN Messenger. As lame as it’ll get. A segway into something more serious, but necessary.
Hotmail
- Owns all the intellectual properties of your email messages, attachments, and contacts. When you sign up, the terms and conditions states that all your belonging on the Hotmail server is that of Microsoft. Switch to Gmail/Yahoomail?
- Has a crappy interface and loads of ads. Switch to Gmail/Yahoomail?
- Is a free email, which is banned from many sites. Many secure registration websites disallow the usage of free emails as a form of communication. Gmail isn’t part of this, yet. Switch to Gmail/Yahoomail?
- Gives you loads of spam, including all unnecessary messages about you know what. Switch to Gmail/Yahoomail?
- Doesn’t filter out those spam. Switch to Gmail/Yahoomail?
- Has the least storage space. Switch to Gmail(2GB) / Yahoomail (soon to be 1GB)?
Msn Today

This whole window is just absolutely wrong. Why the hell would anyone want to open up a heavy-javascript window made by javascript, which only reports celebrities getting impregnated? (Some might want to)
Conclusion - the guys who made this program were kicked in the head by donkeys.
I saw your entry and I must compliment you on your… creative insults and methodical examination of V7.
“The guys who made this program were kicked in the head by donkeys.”
Very nice. I hope it’s no problem if it ever goes onto my quote list sometime in the future.
E.S.
Thank you. Quote all as you wish. :) Frankly, it’s using AIM that got me started dissing MSN Messenger.
Actually I love MSN 7 except for the freezing bit. I just patch what I don’t like. The personal message isn’t for u to type a personal message. It’s for u to show what songs ur playing on windows media player. I personally don’t use windows media player. I use WinAMP which is the best mp3 player in the market. Trust me, I’ve tried MusicMatch, iTunes, SonicStage etc, they don’t have the sound quality of Winamp. Anyways, with the toaster patch, it shows the song u play on winamp instead of the win media player.
I also like the “always sign-on” part. It’s pretty useful since I don’t like being on online mode when I log on.
MsgPlus is old skool. Apatch pwns it. Although MsgPlus say that they don’t have spyware, they actually have one built-in with the program. (Even if you don’t agree to the terms of installing the ads). The scripter decided not to include the disable-ad function. Msg Plus is utterly useless in MSN 7.0.0777. I suggest you use http://www.apatch.tk
BTW, A lot of what you pointed out can be disabled on the options menu. You don’t even need a patch. :)
One word:
Gaim
Ivy: That Apatch did it! Now all the useless stuff from MSN Messenger is gone! That’s so awesome :D Thanks so much!
Satoshi: I tried gaim before, but it didn’t have all the MSN or AIM features (file transfers, webcam, whiteboard ladida).
Wow, that apatch was the best damn thing in ages. Thanks <3
Thats a very good review of MSN… I’m a trillian guy just so everyone can contact me and i still have the resources to run all my memory raping graphics programs… i don’t need a whiteboard or the hassle of ads and winks and nudges… but i guess i’m no fun which is why i don’t get it. :)
Thanks uber! I used to use trillian, but it took up too much cpu and memory.
msn 7 rox….lemme explain….login….online 3 secs….crash cuz of the damn overloaded javascript popup…….w00t they did it again….. sucky msn…….irc rox….hope those guys who made it got kicked in the head by donkeys pretty damn hard!!!!
I hated the new version (MSN 7)… It makes my computer running so slow… Is there any way that I can go back to the older verision of MSN messenger?
Nope. MSN forces you to update your MSN messenger to the newest version. You have two options if you really don’t want to use MSN Messenger.
1. Don’t use it.
2. Use Gaim, or Trillian, an alternative to MSN messenger.
You couldn’t be more right.
You are the first person to see through the **** of Msn messenger. If only so many people wouldn’t use it!
It freezes so much! Argh!
You are so right! Very funny! “Conclusion - the guys who made this program were kicked in the head by donkeys.”
I got to look out for more stuff by you! I trust your judgement!
Wanna know about another alternative??? try http://amsn.sourceforge.net/index.php … the latest version of MSN Messenger took many ideas from this program which had them ages ago… anyhow, Amsn still has many interesting features MSN Messsenger doesn’t have… give it a try, or do as I do: tell everyone to switch to Yahoo Messenger ;)
Haha awesome review of MSN 7, i abhor it and its lag with my deepest passion
I’m getting the freezing now
ARGH
gleice
oi meu nome gleice
i want the new version of msn how do i get it
fukin send me msn mesangher 7.5 pleaase write back ta lovooo
Geez, if you hate it so much, why download it?
…Try using Trillian.
How would I know I hate it if I don’t download it? I’m using GAIM, since it is open source and doesn’t lag as much as Trillian.
MSN is tragic. How can software that used to work fine get progressively worse as newer versions come out. The continual freezing makes it almost worthless. I will be uninstalling mine and looking for options that work.
All of the things you have highlighted in red can be removed with the patchers available from mess.be, you know ;)
And I find personal messages quite useful for things like now playing - I’ve found out people have had interesting tastes by glancing at the contact list and seeing some bizarre post rock band I like.
e/ Oh wait, this is ridiculously old.
I actually found the post after googling “gaim personal messages” :/
Too bad Gaim doesn’t support personal messages. It’s not (yet) a part of the standard MSN protocal.
hey man, were can i find the old msn messenger cuz like the “windows live messenger” is suposto be better. BUT IT SUCKS BALLS
so prettypretty plz send me some information so i can get rid of windows live messenger
Bob, you can find previous versions of MSN Messenger up to 7.5 here.
msn messenger
Yep… I flushed MSN Messenger when they required for the “n” time that you update to the latest version back in March or April 2006. The last version I was using was v6.2.0308 on my old P2s (300MHz and 550MHz). It was nicely patched to my liking of course.
The message that I “could” update to the latest version had been appearing for a while but I always selected the “Remind me in a week” option. In April, the time came when the message stated that “I HAD TO” update to the latest version if I wanted to continue using this shit… “Update my ass, microshaft” is what I was thinking!!!” I went to the “Mess with messenger” site and checked if there was a way around this so called “update”. Unfortunatelly, there was no patch for this. So I uninstalled…
That was OK with me but there is only one problem… What do you do when you have well over 200 contacts that are using this damn service and most are wondering why you cannot be reached anymore?! Do you try to get them ALL to abandon this shitty program? Do you try and convert them back to some other instant messaging service like ICQ, AIM (Beuk!) or Yahoo! ?….
Luckily, on my P2-300MHz, I had WindowsXP. I was still able to use the services of Windows Messenger… But on my P2-550MHz, because I had WindowsME, I was left out. (Of course, I have another computer - a Pentium4-2.8GHz for my family - but this is beside the scope.)
Yes, in an idealistic world, people would be more intelligent and would abandon using programs like this that require more powerfull machines, running services and computer resource hogs that chew at CPU time like cockroaches on bread … In a SUPER idealistic world, people would have NEVER started to use programs like this in the first place. Hey, I switched to MSN back in the old days when I found that ICQ was beginning to claim too much CPU time with their v2000. I thought:”Maybe ICQ could learn a little lesson and copy miCROsoFT’s way with Messenger v2.2″. miCROsoFT Messenger was only 800k!!!
I knew that using a miCROsoFT product was not a step forward. It was just a steady jump… on one foot. I left the other foot in ICQ98 because I had lots of contacts there too (Hey if I could teach my 60 years old mother how to start using ICQ, I sure as hell was not going to let her down. She loved to hear the “Oh-ho!” message when she received an IM. Simply put, I shifted because ICQ was beginning to be a lot more that what an “instant messaging” program ought to be. I tought that it was a temporary shift and always hoped to come back.
But then came the ax…. to ICQ that is. With the first version of WindowsXP came Windows Messenger … Wow… The program was now built-in the OS. And it seemed to beautifully address the issue of “instant messaging” without bells and whisstles… Coming from miCROsoFT…There had to be a catch… Of course, integrating the IM service with the operating system was what seemed like the best thing: no more external program to install, no hasstle with updates or malfunction, etc. So the most bizarre thing started happening in my life: I began converting intelligent, honest and caring humans to miCROsoFT! Huh!? What was I thinking?
Well the catch was all along the path… And most of us chose to follow it… For me it’s worst because I converted these lovable human beings. They took my word for it… And now, they all suffer my recommendation. Now I know how an engineer feels when he recommended some changes and then it all goes wrong… Sniff!
With the first version of WindowsXP, miCROsoFT allowed us to create e-mail addresses @msn.com which would nicely integrate with the messenger service built-in. Then, when you clicked the little “check e-mail” icon for the first time in the messenger window, miCROsoFT politely asked if you would like to activate this feature and then the tiny little 47k patch was downloaded and installed without a fuss. Then, as the versions went up, the IM concept went down. Some TABS - which I found sooooooooooooo useless - were added with v5. “I de-activated them right away by checking the “don’t display my tabs” option. And I always made a religion to do the same on ANY computer that I build and every computers that I serviced. But as for myself, I just went back down to v4.7.
Without too many warnings, the option to check the e-mail in our little Inbox became unavailable. This is when I knew that I WAS on the boat ride with other suckers. Shortly after, when you tried anyway to check for some e-mail, a little message stated that “To use the e-mail checking option, you had to upgrade to MSN Messenger…” And why go thru the hasstle AGAIN of installing (or forcing people to install) an EXTERNAL PROGRAM to do the job of IM. Isn’t that what miCROsoFT was addressing by integrating this in the OS in the first place!? Why?
That was it!… NO, I had to find a way to go on using Windows Messenger WITH e-mail checking option. And I found it. And I used it for soooooo long afterwards.
Now again, I had to find another way to continue using the messenger service without “upgrading”…. Not that I enjoy argueing with the so called “leader in personal computers” but IMHO, the leader lost its place a looooooonnng time ago. (Probably with Windows98). Har har
Well folks, for the ones that have to use this darn service, I have found a way… Too bad it’s a miCROsoFT way… Again… But for now, it works. And I didn’t have to upgrade my computers to Pentium4’s…
I presume that if you red to this point, you too want to know the way, right?
Well, this is the way: MSN Web Messenger ! And GOD it works great… It feels like the old Windows Messenger v4.7 . And no wonder miCROsoFT doesn’t advertize it too much: you will only find a little Ad bar at the bottom of the window and not too much solicitations. No more TABS. No more “customer enjoyment shit”, finally.
So here is the link for it:

Enjoy!

P.S.: For you that red all along thinking that my e-mail address is the one at the top of the post, well my e-mail is really this one:
poursergio@gmail.com
(but I still have a couple of them @hotmail and @msn that I’m holding for now. I receive less and less of “wanted mail” there…. Spammers on the other hand are HAVING A BALL with these addresses. And I make a religion of setting my e-mail filter to NONE so as to keep EVERYTHING in ky INBOX and DELETING anything, so as to keep my inbox close to 250 Meg! HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR)
YES GMAIL IS BETTER…. GET ONE IF YOU CAN (I believe you still need to receive an invitation though) … Gmail is THE BEST… I converted well over 20 people already… And I believe that google WILL TAKE miCROsoFT someday. Maybe not somewhere soon but someday… Too bad they don’t want any money because I WOULD GLADLY give them some.
THE HELL WITH YOU ALL miCROsoFT.
Go collingwood/David

I can sense A LOT of hate for MSN messenger LOL! None the less, I don’t know about you guys, but I like MSN 7. It seems to run fine for me :S The only little problem I have is that when I chat to one particular person on my contact list, sometimes it freezes my msn, then my desktop, then my whole PC :s but it’s only to that ONE person! haha weird, apart from that, it’s all sweet - doesn’t lag, doesn’t slow the PC down, doesn’t piss me off.

Dude that is one awesome post. MSN sucks big time, but everyone’s on that thing. Anyway, once you get a powerful pc, there is no problem. They should build a light version though.
why is msn blocking incoming emails from amazon.com.
i have a serious problem with amazon and cannot resolve it as amazon emails are being blocked WWWWWHHHHYYYYY.
